I’m sad not to have much photographic record from my earliest memories of both Guy and Chelsi, finding each other in the halls we shared at Fraser Court, Edinburgh in September, 2008.
I do however remember very clearly, one crisp Scottish afternoon a decade later. Saturday 22nd September 2018 to be precise. We were halfway through the 1st set of one of my favourite gigs of the year; Edinburgh Lindy Exchange’s swing dance on the mound. Hundreds of dancers, even more spectators gathering around the flash-like mob, and an enthusiastic bubble machine was making for a fine afternoon.
Then, I caught the eye of one dancer in particular, who gave a stare, a smile and then a wave back. I was more than a little surprised to see Chelsi for the first time in a longtime – not at all who I’d expected to see shuffling the shim-sham. She really hadn’t changed at all to my eyes, it was fantastic to catch up when the band took a break, and we arranged for a quick drink later that night when we both had a spare hour.
I don’t normally go for that there fate lark, but with Guy returning to Edinburgh not long before, I’d decided to try and put them back in touch. I handed over his new number to her that evening with intrigue, thinking to myself; “what’s the worst that could happen?”
